Security cameras are everywhere, on our streets at the ATM and in just about every store or business.

Police love them because when a crime is caught on camera, they say the odds they'll make an arrest skyrockets.

In fact, the Orlando Police Department has formed a new tactical squad designed to take advantage of all the crime fighting technology available.

According to the latest market research, nearly one in four homeowners have or plan to install some sort of home security system. But only a fraction of those systems include video surveillance.

Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney told Local 6's Kala Rama that if more homeowners had video cameras, he predicts two things would happen almost immediately.

There would be fewer break-ins and his officers and detectives would clear more burglary cases.

"It's the wave of the future," said Rooney. "I would love for every home owner to have it, but realistically in these tough economic times, it's so tough."

The latest crime statistics show overall crime is down in Orlando, but property crime and burglary are up.

"We had a slew of burglaries in Delany Park over the summer," Rooney said. "Because of videotape, we got a tag number and identified the suspects."

Makoto Schoppert is a Central Florida homeowner who has video cameras around his house. He installed them after a number of break-ins in his neighborhood.

"You don't think something like that is going to happen, you hear about it on TV, it's not going to happen to me, well it can and it did," Schoppert said.

Schoppert's cameras caught burglars in the act.

"I think it really paid off in the end, helped put this guy in jail," Schoppert said. "It keeps him off the streets. He had a record of breaking into homes and I'm sure my house wasn't going to be the last one."

These days, there are lots of video surveillance choices. High end systems with multiple cameras that used to cost thousands are down to just hundreds of dollars to install and monitor.

There are even "video relay" systems which streams video to your cell phone. After installation, the relay runs about 10 dollars a month.

"I could never endorse any certain company or whatever," Rooney said. "But it's a very good investigative tool. Video is very valuable."

Rooney said his department's new technology and forensics unit is a one stop shop for his officers to work any case that involves video. Cases that don't have video, investigators work them hard, but they can be tougher to solve.

The Drug Enforcement Administration suspended two Sanford CVS stores and a wholesale distributor from selling certain controlled substances at a press conference Monday afternoon.

DEA officials said the pharmacies, located at the 3000 block of Orlando Drive and at the 4000 block of West First Street, were each filling prescriptions far in excess of legitimate needs of its customers.

DEA officials raided the two pharmacies on Saturday after more than a year of investigation.

'The amount of Oxycodone by these two pharmacies is in such excess of what is normal that it causes red flags to be raised," said DEA agent Mark Trouville.

The average pharmacy in the U.S. ordered approximately 69,000 oxycodone pills in 2011, the DEA said. Collectively, the two pharmacies, which are located just over 5 miles apart, ordered 3 million oxycodone pills during the same time period.

Officials said at the press conference that the CVS pharmacies knew or should have known a large number of prescriptions for oxycodone weren't issued for legitimate purposes.

The DEA said the illegitimate prescriptions should have been obvious, with in many cases the word "oxycodone" was spelled wrong. In other cases, a group of people would walk in with the same prescription from the same doctor for the same exact problem.

Also included in the investigation is Cardinal Health, which the DEA said was distributing oxycodone to the two CVS pharmacies in question.

The DEA said that Cardinal Health, one of the nation's largest prescription drug distributors, should have known there were illegitimate prescriptions at the two CVS pharmacies.

"DEA does not, has never does not and will not ever target doctors or pharmacists or pharmacies, DEA targets drug dealers." Trouville said.

Friday’s operation at the Lakeland facility is not DEA’s first visit. According to a release,in December 2007, DEA issued an ISO at the location due to its distribution of hydrocodone to ‘rogue’ internet pharmacies. That action, and similar actions at other Cardinal Health facilities across the United States, resulted in a $34 million fine. $16 million of this amount was paid to the United States Attorney’s Office, Middle District of Florida.

Cardinal Health and the two CVS Pharmacy locations will be given an opportunity for an administrative hearing to determine whether the DEA Certificate of Registration at each of the three locations should be revoked, according to a release.

The final decision will be published in the Federal Register.

More than seven million Americans abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2010 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health. And every day, on average, 2,500 teens use them to get high for the first time, according to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America.

No arrests have been made in connection to the raids, but the DEA said there could be some in the future.

Authorities on Monday released the 911 calls made just minutes after a man was fatally shot in the back at a Super Bowl party in Longwood.

In the 911 calls, the caller says the suspects came into the house "asking for a lighter and they just started shooting."

Longwood Police Chief Troy Hickson said 25-year-old Donnie Shepard was shot in the back by a guest Sunday afternoon after the two got into an argument. Hickson was taken to South Seminole Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Neighbor Chris Olsen said the shooting is the last straw and he's moving out of the small apartment complex on Wildmere Avenue near U.S. 17-92.

"It's out of concern for my son," Olsen said. "We're just packing up. We're leaving because the cops are here quite often."

Olsen said the fact that the killer is still on the loose is scary.

"That's why we've got chains and everything locked up. You don't know if they're going to return or not," Olsen said.

A friend of Shepard said he was an excellent soccer player. Sonny Bunch, who lives down the street from Shepard's apartment, said he often saw him in the neighborhood.

"It really shocked me because I never saw (Shepard) hanging out with the bad people," Bunch said.

Angie Boswell lives near 861 Wildmere Ave., and has a different opinion. Boswell said police were called to the complex and that address all too often, and in this case, her 12-year-old son saw the violence firsthand.

"It's sorry for my little boy to see two criminals just kill somebody go running down the road," Boswell said.

Longwood police said one of the assailants was a black man, about 20 years old, 6 feet tall and 300 pounds. He had a scruffy beard and braids in his hair. The other was described only as a man of average height and build. He was wearing blue jeans, a plaid shirt and was clean shaven. The duo arrived at the home in a small burgundy, two-door vehicle. Witnesses said the car's paint job was after-market, possibly a dark candy red color.

Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.

According to a new policy enacted late last year, Volusia County schools will no longer check children for head lice, but many parents were never told of the change.

Kitchen sink showers have become routine in Joy Kittrell's house ever since her daughter, Amber, came home with head lice. She spent Monday evening shampooing her daughter's hair and combing out the tiny bugs.

But what gets Kittrell angry is the school district's new policy about head lice, and the fact she says she was never informed of the change. Kittrell learned the district no longer checks children for lice, and there's no policy that forces schools to tell parents about a lice outbreak.

"They notify you over stupid things, but they can't notify you when your kids got a contagious situation going on that's going to cost each family tons of money," said Kittrell.

Volusia County Schools spokeswoman Nancy Wait said in an email, "We don't have a policy to notify parents. Some schools did as a practice, others did not. We are more focused on educating parents to routinely check their own children's heads for lice. Head lice is a social issue, not a health threat."

"I won't be sending her to school tomorrow because I disagree with the policy," said Kittrell, who voluntarily pulled Amber from school because she doesn't want other parents to spend their nights combing for lice.

"My biggest issue is they should have sent an email or a note home... So that parents could be advocates for their kids and keep an eye out and protect their kids as well as everybody else's," said Kittrell.

Kittrell said on Monday, her daughter's principal promised to send a letter to parents later this week that explains the policy change and informs them that lice have been in the school. However, Kittrell notes that does not solve the policy problem district-wide.

Volusia County stopped checking students for lice because it became too expensive, and so parents wonder if other districts might be in the same boat.

Local 6 is in the process of getting answers to head lice policy questions from all central Florida school districts.
